It struck me the other day that while authentic Jewry in the US decries Jews who are just in it for the holidays, and observant, truly ritualistic-cannibalistic Catholics resent those who simply like the holy bling, there aren’t really anything but moderate Shintoists in Japan. I’ve never run into people having discussions over how to interpret specific passages of Shinto scripture or how one can remain true to one’s Shinto beliefs while living in this ever-changing world. Everyone seems just to believe in ringing the bells at the shrine and tossing them a coin or two. Everyone’s a 2-day Jew here, and actually, that’s pretty sweet.
