In Budapest, they have an annual day in each district when you can throw all your unwanted stuff out, and the city will collect it. For about two days, the sidewalks of the district currently having its lomtalanitás are blocked by the stuff that’s accumulated over the previous year. Also, members of Hungary’s economically disadvantaged minority group come in to town from the countryside, rifle through the piles and collect the reusable stuff before the trash collectors arrive. A day later, things return to normal, thankfully.
