There’s been something of a hubbub lately with all these people committing suicide-by-cleaning product. This being Japan, people are considerate enough to hang a sign on their door warning passersby of the deadly hydrogen sulfide gas being produced within – but gas is gas, and doesn’t necessarily confine itself to people in the immediate visual range of the sign. It’s an interesting phenomenon because it’s symptomatic simultaneously of many problems in modern Japanese society – these odd suicide websites where people get the recipe for making this stuff at home and make suicide pacts with other posters, the very high but unfortunately understandable suicide rate, and the need to not feel like you’re inconveniencing the people around you by acting on your wishes. Overall, it’s the kind of thing you can read about in the newspaper anywhere in the world and come away knowing at least a few quite essential things about this society.

Gracias, I’ll try to keep you entertained.
When you say news, do you mean like the evening news, or just like a blog entry on BBC.co.uk?

I don’t have a tv and I think I read it at home so it had to be printed and the only paper I think worth buying is the Guardian/Observer it so must have been there. It wasn’t a ‘news’ piece, more of a feature article exploring an issue. There’s been a lot about suicide here lately mostly since there is some village/tiny town in Wales where something like 20 teens have hanged themselves in a year, something like 500% the normal rate for a town of their size…. and they are wanting to blame the internet as usual.

I found your site on technorati and read a few of your other posts. Keep up the good work. I just added your RSS feed to my Google News Reader. Looking forward to reading more from you down the road!
